Gerry Brisson

President and CEO, Gleaners Community Food Bank of SE Michigan

Gerry Brisson is the President and CEO of Gleaners Community Food Bank of SE Michigan (Gleaners).

Headquartered in Detroit, Gleaners operates five distribution centers in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Livingston and Monroe counties and provides food to 534 partner soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters and other agencies throughout southeastern Michigan. Gleaners collects over 42 million pounds of food a year and distributes over 90,000 meals each day. Gleaner also provides nourishing food and nutrition education to 171,000 children a year. Every dollar donated provides three meals and 95 cents of every donated dollar goes to food and food programs.

Gerry’s life work and passion have been creating food security for others and always looks for people who can teach him more.  His laugh is infectious and always just under the surface.  He is best known for getting things done and doing what he says he is going to do.  He is most proud of his family and his team at Gleaners.

Gerry has a way of reimagining what’s possible, planning to get there, and energizing a team to realize its potential.  He believes everyone has a role in ending hunger and food insecurity.  He sees food insecurity as a root cause and contributor to most social ills and believes you have to solve hunger before you can effectively fix any other social problem.  He spends most hours of every day fixing that.

Gerry holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in organizational management from the University of Phoenix and has earned a post-graduate certificate in fundraising management from the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University.

Gerry is the chair of the board of the Food Bank Council of Michigan, serving his third year in that role.  He is a graduate of Leadership Detroit and, in 2007, Fund Raising Success Magazine named him a Fund Raising Professional of the Year. In his career, he has raised over $150 million dollars to provide food for people in need of help.
